Strategy

“By failing to plan, you are planning to fail”

Benjamin Franklin

At a basic level a strategy is a plan to achieve a goal or set of goals.

However an effective strategy is much more than this. An effective strategy has the following attributes:

  • understands the specific organisational context, its operating environment and what it is trying to achieve

  • clearly identifies current state issues and opportunities and validates these with the right people

  • states a clear and compelling vision that is both pragmatic and relevant to the context of the organisation concerned

  • outlines a programme of work to move from the current state to the desired future state

  • demonstrates how it supports the organisation to achieve both operational and strategic outcomes

  • supports investment in the desired business capabilities

  • inspires people because it has the answers to solving their problems and helping achieve their goals

The above is not an exhaustive list but highlights some critical elements.

Above all avoid the ‘emperor’s new clothes’.

An effective strategy is built on honest and critical evaluation, thorough analysis, clear goals and a pragmatic implementation plan.
